Girl and Dog: A Love Story

I first posted this “story” on July 11, 2008.  It was (and still is) meant to be a tribute to my precious dog, Bear, who passed away on July 5, 2008.  I removed it from my blog a long time ago because I was so very, very sad and it really showed in the pictures.  Thoughts of reposting this “story” have been nagging at me for the past few months, so I decided it was time.  I reshot all the pictures and changed some of the clothes.

If you’re a dog owner (or guardian, if you prefer), then you’ll understand completely about the concept of a “once in a lifetime” dog.  Bear was my first dog and my “once in a lifetime” dog.  We had 14 wonderful years together and I wish we’d had more.  I will love and miss him always, but I am (finally) at the point where I no longer mourn his death, but instead, celebrate his living.  The stuffed animal I use in these pictures is pretty close in appearance to Bear when he was a pup.  My stuffed pup is named, “Bear, Jr.”.  Without further ado, here is “Girl and Dog:  A Love Story” …

  1. Oh Carole, I feel for you so much and I understand the loss. Every day I mourn the loss of a childhood dog who passed away when I was in 9th grade, Smurfette. Your Bear looks so cute in all his photos. I just want to play with him. I am sure you miss him dearly. I have a hard time with losing pets and I feel they are sometimes the only ones who really understand who I am deep down. I am sorry I did not get to see your older post on Bear. He is a black beauty and seems like a bigger version of my little toy poodle Bella, but obviously not a poodle. I adore animals so much and my original plans were veterinary school. I wish I could save all animals and make them live forever sometimes, as naive as it sounds. I am sure Bear is smiling down on you and so happy to see you celebrating his life again. xoxo

  3. I’m so sorry for your loss, Carole. I know the hardship that is mourning a beloved pet. You were lucky to have him in your life and he was lucky to have you. My family lost our dog, Milo a year and a half ago and my father still can barely speak his name without tearing up. I am glad you put the post back up and reshot the narrative to convey less sadness and more celebration of the life and joy he brought you. xo

  5. My beloved cat, who was nearly 17, passed away last October. I still think of him daily, and he will be Forever In My Heart. He was one of a kind, we were made for eachother, and I will never have another cat. I always said I wanted him to live forever.

I want my dalmatian to live forever also. She is nearing her life expectancy, and her age is starting to show. I just enjoy ever moment I have with her, as she is so precious, and an important part of our family.

Our fashion sense is complete opposites (you’d probably find mine to be quite boring, lol), but I visit your blog occassionally as I enjoy checking out your style. After reading this post, I’ll enjoy stopping by even more — knowing you not only have big style, but also a big heart. You can tell the size of a person’s heart by their love for animals.

  7. Aw, it hurts so much to lose a pet, I’m so sorry Carole. I still get twisted up when I think about my childhood puppy :/ I’m glad that you found it in yourself to reshoot and repost these, and think it shows so much about you that you still care and celebrate your relationship with him :)

  11. What a beautiful dog. Such a sweet, intelligent expression on his face! I’m glad you were able to find such enjoyment with him. I lost my dog many years ago, and he went through so much with me. It was very difficult to handle. I now have two dogs, but that one will always have a very special place in my heart. I’m glad you can find joy in celebrating Bear’s life now!

  12. Hi- I read your blog about your dog who you love so much. I think there are many special reasons why people like their dog. I once lived in China, now in Japan, and have fed three dogs in the different time.I have been doing a lot of writing about loving dog and was wondering if i could write a piece for your blog. Also i can write on other topics ,too.
